A Glimpse into the Top 3 Cosmetic Trends Taking Over 2021

Dr Mark Attalla

When it comes to beauty trends, there’s always something new and exciting on the market. As soon as you jump on the bandwagon of one, another comes flying in that all the beauty gurus are raving about. For cosmetic surgery, technology is better than ever and new techniques are making classic procedures a thing of the past.

Surprisingly, cosmetic beauty continues to thrive in times of economic havoc. While some brands took a hit over COVID-19, overall I believe the industry remains resilient, and certain areas are even better off than pre-COVID-19. Who would’ve guessed?   To this end, maybe 2021 is time to take ‘new year, new me’ to a new level’. Already this year, three key trends have taken over the market, resulting in our clinic being busier than ever.

Here is a snapshot for you   …

#1:   Non-invasive skin tightening . . .

Age and sun damage can put a spanner in the works when it comes to skin resilience, and issues such as wrinkling and spotting affects us all. As a result, the demand for skin treatments has always been high.

There’s a whole gallery of solutions out there, from lotions, to home remedies, to full-blown surgery, and each can result in different effects for your skin. In the past, many women and men have opted for surgery to reduce loose skin, especially after childbirth and dramatic weight loss. It’s a surprisingly popular procedure for many, but as you can imagine, surgery is not everyone’s cup of tea with the risk of scarring and potential complications. Recently, surgeons have developed what they call ‘non-invasive skin tightening’, which is skin treatment with less steps, reduced risk, and best of all – no surgery.

Radio frequency and high-intensity focused ultrasound technologies (a fancy machine) combine to make a skin rejuvenation holy grail, which when zapped onto the area gives skin a natural looking lift – pretty cool if you ask me. It seems that this solution is all the rage in 2021, and slowly, more cosmetic surgeries are transitioning to simple treatments.

#2  Combination surgical and non surgical treatment

Sure, non-invasive surgeries are the cutting edge trend right now, but what about those procedures where you can’t avoid surgery? As they say, there’s always a compromise – and that’s where combination surgeries come in.

This usually involves your normal surgery, but with an add on or two. Cosmetic surgery is now often done in conjunction with the many non-invasive surgeries recently available, which are often used to enhance the result of the surgery, or provide a better treatment plan for the patient.

Botox is now frequently combined with upper eye lifts, which according to surgeons is effective because injecting a person while they are sleeping can lead to better results and reduced tension. As some of the most popular procedures, lip fillers and nose jobs are now often paired, as a change in lip shape can help achieve the balanced face proportions many hope for when receiving a nose job. In 2021, people are killing two cosmetic surgery birds with one stone.

#3:   Skin texture and tone enhancement

A common theme in these 2021 cosmetic trends is skin – over quarantine it seems people have had more downtime to focus on their blemishes, wrinkles, and even texture and tone. Better skin is now in reach with a menu full of non-surgical skin rejuvenation techniques available, and people are queuing out the door to get them.

The problem with many skin treatments is that they can be painful, sometimes bloody, and require lots of downtime. The recently introduced VIVACE treatment is reportedly less painful and traumatic for the skin. It uses radiofrequency to seal bleeding areas and stimulate collagen production – which if you don’t know what that means, basically it makes for an altogether pleasant process with a quicker recovery. Skin booster injections are also the rage, which have proven to be a quick and seamless experience, leaving behind more painful options in 2020.

Technology has really outdone itself this year, and people are enhancing their appearance left, right and centre with the zap of a machine or push of a needle. Who knows, maybe even newer procedures will be in fashion before you can say ‘summer’ again; but for now, it seems these three have swept the world of cosmetic surgery by its feet.

Over the coming months, I will delve deeper into my 2021 predicted treatments.
